Use a Wi-Fi demo image on Atmel SAM9 platforms

The following image files are available for the SAM9X5EK, SAM9M10-EKES, SAM9M10 G45-EK, SAM9G20-EK and SAM9RLEK platforms:

File Version Description
at91sam9x5ek-wifi-1.0.6.zip 1.0.6 Wi-Fi demo image for SAM9X5EK
at91sam9g20ek-wifi-1.0.6.zip 1.0.6 Wi-Fi demo image for SAM9G20-EK (EXPERIMENTAL)
at91sam9m10ekes-wifi-1.0.5.zip 1.0.5 Wi-Fi demo image for SAM9M10-EKES
at91sam9m10g45ek-wifi-1.0.5.zip 1.0.5 Wi-Fi demo image for SAM9M10G45-EK
at91sam9rlek-wifi-1.0.5.zip 1.0.5 Wi-Fi demo image for SAM9RLEK
at91sam9m10ekes-wifi-1.0.4.zip 1.0.4 Wi-Fi demo image for SAM9M10-EKES

The procedure is a little bit different depending on the windows version used. If a linux host is used, see http://www.at91.com/linux4sam/bin/view/Linux4SAM/GettingStarted#Flashing_a_demo_on_AT91_boards for information about how to flash the demo image.

When the platform is started with a demo image, the Wi-Fi device can be used according to description in the UseDrivers topics.

NOTE: The wpa_supplicant is included in the demo image and is launched at boot time. If you wan't to evaluate the Wi-Fi device using wireless tools, make sure to shutdown the wpa_supplicant first.

NOTE: See board-specific notes at end of this page.

Windows (common steps for all windows versions)

  1. Install the SAM-BA tool. It can be downloaded from: http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=3883
For SAM9X5EK: After SAM-BA is installed, download and install the additional patch to sam-ba: http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/sam-ba-2.10-sam9g15_g25_g35_x25_x35_patch_1.0.zip
  2. Download the desired image file (compressed) from the table above.
  3. Uncompress the image file.
  4. For SAM9M10-EKES and SAM9M10G45-EK: Make sure that the jumpers on the board are configured according to the default settings, as shown in this picture: http://www.at91.com/linux4sam/pub/Linux4SAM/GettingStarted/9m10g45_default_jumpers_settings.png. Then open jumper JP10 and JP12 on the board.
For SAM9RLEK: Set jumper J11 to position 1-2 and open jumper J12 and J13.
    For SAM9G20EK: Open J7, J33, J34.
For SAM9X5EK: Open jumpers on the CPU-board.
  5. Attach the power cable to the board
  6. Attach the USB cable to the board and the PC.
  7. The PC should now find the board.
  8. For SAM9M10-EKES and SAM9M10G45-EK: Now close jumpers JP10 and JP12.
    For SAM9RLEK: Close jumpers J12 and J13.
    For SAM9G20EK: Close J33, J34.
For SAM9X5EK: Close jumpers on the CPU-board.

Windows 7

  1. Perform the common steps as described above.
  2. The board will show up as "GPS Camera Detect (COM6)" in the device manager.
  3. Open a command window
  4. Cd to the directory which contain the contents of the unzipped file.
  5. Execute the following command
    sam-ba_cdc.exe
  6. A small window with the title "SAM-BA CDC 2.10" should show up. In this window, select the board connection and the board type. Then press "connect".
  7. The main SAM-BA CDC window will now open. Select "Execute Script File" from the "Script File" menu and select the tcl-file which ends with "_nandflash.tcl".
  8. The flashing of the image will now start and might take 5-10 minutes.

Windows XP

  1. Perform the common steps as described above.
  2. Use windows explorer to find the contents of the unzipped file.
  3. Double-click on the bat-file which ends with "_nandflash.bat".
  4. A log-file will pop up when the flashing is completed.

SAM9G20-EK

  • This development board has two MMC connectors. The J35 connector is used, since the other connector does not support SDIO.
  • The Card Detection fails, therefore PC2 needs to be connected to GND using a wire.
  • If the second connector is used for an SD-Card, then PC9 needs to be Grounded.

SAM9X5EK

  • This development board has two MMC connectors, as for SAM9G20-EK.
  • The Card Detection fails, but what pins need to be connected to GND? That is the question...
