Getting Started

This page will guide you to add Wi-Fi cabability to your platform. The required steps depend on which level of platform support that is currently provided by HD Wireless.

Conceptually, the linux driver could be used on any host platform that supports Linux, however the testing has been focused on the Atmel SAM9M10-EKES development kit using an ARM926 core on the Atmel SAM9M10 application processor.

The owl device driver implements and reuses tools and interfaces that are de-facto standard in Linux systems. Therefore, most information presented here can also be found in manual pages and from various web resources. However, the purpose of this site is to act as a quick start for evaluating the HD Wireless Wi-Fi device and to highlight any extensions or limitations specific to this driver.

The following options will be described in more detail:

Add Wi-Fi support to a custom linux-based platform

If you want to add Wi-Fi support to a custom linux-based platform using a kernel version 2.6.23 or later, you should perform the following steps:

  1. Get the SPB104 Wi-Fi device, see http://www.hd-wireless.se
  2. Download the Wi-Fi driver source code and libraries from DownloadDrivers
  3. Build and install the Wi-Fi driver according to BuildDrivers
  4. Use the Wi-Fi driver according to UseDrivers

Add Wi-Fi support to a supported platform

If you want to add Wi-Fi support to a platform that is listed in the Platforms topic, the build and install of the Wi-Fi driver is usually integrated into the build procedure that is used for that particular platform, e.g. OpenEmbedded.

Any special steps needed (e.g. kernel patches) for these platforms will be described in the Platforms topic and the Wi-Fi driver has also been tested in those particular environments.

However, note that it still possible to build and install the driver the "manual" way on these platforms.

Perform the following steps to add Wi-Fi support to a supported platform:

  1. Get the SPB104 Wi-Fi device, see http://www.hd-wireless.se
  2. Following the description for the particular platform, according to Platforms
  3. Use the Wi-Fi driver according to UseDrivers

Add Wi-Fi support through a demo image

Demo images are provided for supported platforms to get a Wi-Fi enabled platform up and running in no time. The demo images are pre-compiled binaries which should be flashed into the platform. The exact procedure depends on the particular platform.

To install a demo image on a supported platform, perform the following steps:

  1. Get the SPB104 Wi-Fi device, see http://www.hd-wireless.se
  2. Following the description for the particular platform, according to DemoImages
